Where did the time go?
Twenty two years ago we sat down at the dinner table with a cool idea to open a coffeehouse. We had about fifteen thousand dollars and an exceptionally great location in downtown Old Bisbee. Along with a passion for our product and some exceedingly helpful and patient friends we shouted, "Burn the Boats", as we channeled 1595 Spanish Conquistador Hernan Cortez and embarked on a voyage that had only one destination, success, or as Cortez warned his shipmates…death! We had every discipline available to push us out to sea to include marketing, legal, business, food service, design and most importantly, family and faith. Our ship sailed because success was the only option!
The learning curve was particularly steep. Customer relationships were fun but budgets, payroll, personnel management, taxes and systems were not! Like any new business or new ship we struggled to keep afloat in the first few years as we learned how to navigate unfamiliar waters. Tempers flew when money was tight, relationships tested and friendships bonded forever.
Now, 22 years later and sitting on what I describe as a launching point for our next endeavor some would say we have succeeded. I am not sure there is such a thing as “success” in business. Every day we carefully raise the canopy of our shop at 6:30 a.m. just as we have done for the past 22 years, it seems the expectations of our customers change, the demands of the markets move and the dreams and desires of our staff are elevated with new opportunites.
So, on we go, across the vast expanse of uncertainty with a cup of coffee in one hand and our guiding principles in the other, to take care of you and take care of each other. At the end of the day that is how we measure success. That is the mast upon which we will hoist our sails and chart our course. Thank you for visiting our website and being a patron of our dream job. We look forward to the journey with you, discovering great coffees and lasting relationships.
